The original graphic novel by Alan Moore is one of the best works of fiction in the 20th century. Moore injects steroids into the dominant ideology of the 70s. The comic asks the question “What would happen if the ruling class got everything that they wanted?”
The point of the graphic novel is that you ought to think long and hard about what happens when you give unlimited power to a nefarious global hegemon. Superheroes don’t belong in the real world. They should be flights of fancy for bored children, if even that.
Enter HBO’s new show. This new show is a disaster. The production value is high and the boom-booms are gorgeous, but the agenda of the show is bourgeois liberal bullshit. The genius of Moore’s comic is that is firmly grounded in reality. It is a counterfactual history on par with Philip K Dick’s The Man in the High Castle and Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America. This new show aspires to be ‘profound’ and ‘historical,’ but it misses the mark completely.
he show’s creator, Lindelof, views the state as a bulwark against white supremacy. In his sheltered liberal worldview, he is unable to grasp the complicity of oppression, he is a historical illiterate
They idolize neoliberal sellouts like Nancy Pelosi and praise billionaire sociopaths like Bill Gates. Lindelof shows the Tulsa Race Riot, which is an overlooked and disgusting moment in American history, but he merely recreates the tragedy, dusts off his hands, and proclaims himself an ally to black people
