Every once in a while a self-own comes along that’s just too good to pass up or too hard to resist saying something about. When Roseanne brought her show back to TV last year it was a massive hit in every possible way you can measure a TV show. So how did ABC self own themselves so badly?
Ratings were huge and the critics loved it. The sponsors couldn’t line up fast enough to advertise on her show. The “hook” was that Roseanne was a Trump supporter amid her family of crazy regressive lefties.
This meant although she got in lots of pro Trump stuff the rest of the cast were allowed to make fun of him. Which is what made it a great show to begin with. Everyone has the one crazy old Aunt in their family that is a little unbalanced and everyone makes fun of, but she spouts just enough truth that nobody wants to cross her. That is Roseanne…
Without rehashing the whole thing IRL Roseanne made a tweet that most people took completely out of context and accused of her racism. If you want to spend the time digging into it and not just ready reactionary MSM pieces you will see racism had nothing to do with it.
You would think she murdered babies in the middle of the street, ABC fired her literally within a day of the tweet going live. Oddly enough not a single sponsor had pulled out or threatened to. Roseanne even apologized for the tweet and tried to explain to people the point she was making. To no avail.
Fast forward a year later and Roseanne did a very self less thing and gave up all financial rights to her own characters on the show so the network could reboot the show without her and call it The Conners.
The show is set to debut Oct. 16th, 2018 and the network upon seeing early reports from the text viewers realizes they have a total dog on their hands. They are now even saying maybe we shouldn’t have fired Roseanne so quickly and trying to walk their actions back.
Too late weasals, you made your bed now you get to sink to the bottom of the ratings in it…
