If you've been watchign the news the last few days you likely have seen a huge outcry over the upcoming new movie on Netflix called Cuties. It's promo goes as follows: Eleven-year-old immigrant girl Amy, originally hailing from Senegal, lives with her mother Mariam in one of Paris's poorest neighbourhoods in an apartment along with her two younger brothers awaiting for her father to rejoin the family from Senegal. Things turn swiftly as Amy is fascinated by her disobedient neighbour Angelica's twerking clique called Cuties, an adult-style dance troupe which has contrasting fortunes and characteristics to Mariam's traditional customs, values and traditions.
The first thing I'm really stuck by is the fact they want us to believe that there are tons of 11 year old girls running around twerking. I totally agree that kids are maturing faster these days and it's not a good thing as their actions and bodies are being controlled by a brain that simply hasn't developed enough to fully under the repercussions of their actions.
The weird thing is that the poster for the movie was highly sexualizing 11 year old girls, which you would expect from all the creeps and pervs in the movie industry. But the creator of the film says it's actually about the problem with young girls being hypersexulized. I haven't seen the movie and I won't as the subject matter doesn't interest me.
But, how does making a movie about 11 year old twerking girls express concern? How does creating artwork which completely sexulizes young girls get that point across?
There is so much wrong with this on every level. Who knows maybe I'm completely off base and it's a great tale about the dangers of over sexualizing younger girls… but you'd never know by the promos for it out there….
I cancelled my Netflix last month because of this garbage film.
I’m with ya brother and so are thousands more. Their stock took a major hit over this. What a disgrace
It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. Stand strong.
