Okay, I won’t deny it, I enjoyed Alanis Morissette’s somewhat screachy album back in the day. The grunge queen, for my taste, could put across a nice musical phrasing. Several of the songs remain thoroughly humable still. But in the age of #theresistance all good things in the culture have to be turned in to crap.
In a style that’s come to be known as the jukebox musical, the Jagged Little Pill album has been converted into a Broadway show. That wouldn’t necessarily all be bad. Nice for the Gen-Xers to see that Broadway has recognized it’s time to start exploiting their nostalgia. That’s nice.
But of course none of this can be done without reducing the story superimposed over the songs to a check list of woke causes. So, let’s see, those sweet, innocent songs of the universal angst of youth, now kowtow to the PC agenda hitting upon (among others): bisexuality, gender fluidity, the opiate crisis, porn addiction, race relations, #MeToo and Twitter-brigading. Not to mention trans-racial adoption. Which apparently is becoming a woke issue these days.
The New York Times has described it as the most woke musical since Hair. I guess.
Well, you’ve been warned; spend your entertainment dollar accordingly.
