Sacha Baron Cohen is pretty much a jerk. I don’t deny he has comedic talent. He’s even funny sometimes, but the depths to which he stoops to make gratuitous political points is just a little too low. The most recent case, of course, as many of you will know was his treatment of Sarah Palin. You don’t have to be a fan of Palin, nor deny that she may not be the brightest politician out there. And, sure, politicians make themselves fair game. But what we do know is that Cohen faked being a disabled U.S. war veteran to lure her and her daughter to travel across the country.
Once she arrived, she was set up for the usual continual stream of humorless left wing “comedy” – ripe with innuendo and PC sarcasm. Then, Palin claims, representatives of the show deliberately dropped her off at the wrong airport, knowing she’d miss her plane. Well, whether it was deliberate or not, it was incompetent at best, and given the overall set up of Palin, it isn’t hard to believe it was indeed malicious.
Again, say what you want about Palin, but she has been a consistent supporter of veterans and using this kind of scam to set her up and treat her support of veterans with such disrespect is despicable. But is this sort of thing really funny? Exploiting people’s kindness to mock them? This is funny?
And, remember, this is nothing new for Cohen. In his awarding winning 2006 film Borat, he set out to demonstrate what fools and baffoons Americans were. But, of course, for anyone whose judgment was not clouded by fervent anti-Americanism, the truth was that his victims were for the most part kind, patient, generous people whose only really obvious faults were their willingness to endlessly give this cretin the benefit of the doubt and allowing him to make a spectacle of them.
Woke comedy is driving humor into the gutter. And Cohen, admittedly, is at the far edge of the worst. But, don’t be surprised if it turns out he has only been a harbinger of what’s to come. #theresistance
